Did you hear about the bones they dug up? They come from the "montessorus"...
No. Not really...
That's the word I gave the Montessori school that is going to be the new school for two of my children. If only one of my children were going, then I would call it Montessori, but because there is more than one going...kinda like fungus, octopus...
You get me?
Anyway, we have made the decision to move my 6 and 9 year old to a Montessorus school. In a strange turn of events, this school kind of fell into our laps. Neither my husband nor I even knew there was a Montessori school in our area. Then in a matter of two days, both of us had conversations with two different people about this school and all it's qualities. This has been an answer to prayers concerning especially our 6 year old who is, well, VERY active and our 9 year old who is "bored" at school.
Here is what I've learned about the Montessori approach...basically, the children learn all they want without interruption and learn from other older children. They learn from all five senses instead of just hearing, reading and listening. I love this approach.
We went last night and took a tour of the school. The tour that was supposed to last like maybe a half an hour, lasted like, an hour and a half. My kids were stoked! Guess what? I'm stoked too!!! Why you ask? NO homework! That means we can do HOME stuff at home. School work at school and home work at home. Love it. That's just one reason I love it. Ok, one of the MAIN reasons...
Another main reason is that they have very healthy breakfasts and lunches. They already use whole grains in their menus. I love that so much! I've been very concerned about the types of food they serve at current schools...
I really feel that this school will supply what both of my children are lacking at their current school. I'm very anxious to get them started, see their progress and learn a few things myself.
I want to go observe the non traditional Montessori approach to music.
Any thoughts and feelings about Montessori schools? Leave me a comments, I'd love to hear them. If you have none, maybe you're like me and didn't even know that there was one of these schools in your area. No time like the present to explore something new that might be just what your child needs to succeed...
This video brought tears to my eyes...
Now the only down side is that I'm going to have to drive my kids to and from the bus stop every day, but that should be ok since we are this late in the year.
Hi DeAna, I have read a little bit about Montessori schools before as my nearly 6 year old is quite bright, finds school boring and is not challenged enough at school. We don't have one in our area but am interested in alternative schools. Great post. Leahx
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry there isn't one in your area, but it might be worth it to look into the curriculum and try some of the methods at home.
ReplyDeleteGood luck.
After kids being in school there for a few weeks they love it. My third grader is doing 4th and 5th grade math and my first grader is doing multiplication. They get their work done there and don't have homework (a huge plus for me) and teachers don't yell there. I've sat in on a few minutes of class and liked what I saw. I want to volunteer and learn a bit more.
